8 Hill Stations Near Delhi for a Weekend Getaway (Uttarakhand Edition)

Quick answer: The easiest hill stations to reach from Delhi for a weekend are Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Jim Corbett and Nainital, all within roughly 240 to 300 km. With the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway now open, Mussoorie and Rishikesh are quicker than ever. For a long weekend, Mukteshwar, Ranikhet, Almora and Kausani reward the extra hours with quieter roads and bigger Himalayan views.

Friday evening, the city is loud, and you’ve got two days. The question isn’t whether to head for the hills. It’s which one, and whether you’ll spend half your weekend in traffic getting there.

We work with hotels across Uttarakhand, so this is a list built from the questions our guests actually ask: how long the drive really takes, what each place is good for, and when to go.

How to choose the right hill station from Delhi

Before the list, three quick filters that save a lot of back-and-forth:

  • How much time do you have? For a regular two-night weekend, stay under about 300 km. Save the 350 km-plus places for a long weekend.
  • Who’s travelling? Families with young children usually prefer a short drive and a resort with plenty to do on-site. Couples tend to enjoy the quieter towns further in.
  • What’s the season? Some places shine in winter, others in summer. We’ve noted the best months for each below.

1. Rishikesh

  • Distance from Delhi: About 240 km
  • Drive time: Around 4 to 5 hours
  • Best for: River rafting, yoga, the Ganga aarti, cafés and a slower, spiritual pace
  • Best time: October to April for pleasant weather; rafting usually runs from mid-September to June

Rishikesh is less a hill station and more a river town at the edge of the hills, but it’s one of the most-searched weekend trips from Delhi for good reason. Mornings by the Ganga are calm, afternoons can be as adventurous as you want, and the evening aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan is worth planning your day around.

Where to stay: Arista Haven, Grand Shiva Resort & Spa, or N3N Ganga Retreat, depending on whether you want town convenience, resort comforts or riverside quiet.

2. Mussoorie

  • Distance from Delhi: About 280 km
  • Drive time: Now roughly 4 to 5 hours, thanks to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, which opened in April 2026 and cut the Delhi to Dehradun leg to about 2.5 hours
  • Best for: Classic hill-station charm, Mall Road walks, Landour, Kempty Falls and colonial-era cafés
  • Best time: March to June for summer escapes; December to February for crisp winter days and occasional snow

The new expressway has quietly made Mussoorie the most practical hill station for a short Delhi weekend. Leave after an early breakfast and you can be walking up to Landour’s Char Dukan by lunchtime.

Where to stay: Kenilworth or Luxury Inn, both well placed for exploring the town.

3. Jim Corbett

  • Distance from Delhi: About 250 to 260 km
  • Drive time: Around 5 to 6 hours
  • Best for: Tiger safaris, birding, riverside resorts and family trips
  • Best time: Mid-October to June. Bijrani opens on 15 October and Dhikala on 15 November.

Not technically a hill station, but Corbett sits in the Himalayan foothills and is one of the most popular weekend escapes from Delhi. The trick is to book your safari permit before you book anything else. Our Jim Corbett safari guide walks through zones and booking.

Where to stay: Aura by Xperience, our luxury resort in the Corbett wilderness.

4. Nainital

  • Distance from Delhi: About 300 km
  • Drive time: Around 6 to 7 hours by road, or the Kathgodam Shatabdi plus a 35 km taxi ride
  • Best for: Lake views, boating, Mall Road, Snow View Point and an easy all-round family holiday
  • Best time: March to June for summer; December to February for winter, clear mountain views and a chance of snow

Nainital is the hill station most Delhi families grew up visiting, and it still delivers. Go beyond the lakefront: the ropeway to Snow View Point, the walk to Tiffin Top and the forest roads to Kilbury show a calmer side of town. Visiting in winter? Read our guide to snowfall in Nainital first.

Where to stay: Seasons by Xperience, Langdale Manor or Xomotel Bungalow Nainital.

5. Mukteshwar

  • Distance from Delhi: About 340 to 370 km
  • Drive time: Around 8 to 9 hours (roughly 50 km beyond Nainital)
  • Best for: Wide Himalayan views, orchards, quiet walks and the cliffs at Chauli ki Jali
  • Best time: October to June; December and January if you’re hoping for snow

If Nainital feels too busy, Mukteshwar is the answer. It’s higher, greener and far quieter, with views that on a clear morning stretch across a long line of snow peaks. Best as a long weekend, or combined with a night in Nainital.

Where to stay: Sukama Resort & Spa.

6. Ranikhet

  • Distance from Delhi: About 360 km
  • Drive time: Around 8 to 9 hours (about 60 km beyond Nainital)
  • Best for: Pine forests, the Chaubatia orchards, golf at Upat and a cantonment town’s calm, tidy feel
  • Best time: March to June and September to November

Ranikhet is one of those places that doesn’t shout for attention, which is exactly why people love it. Long walks under the pines, a round of golf, and evenings that are genuinely quiet.

Where to stay: Xomotel Ranikhet Heights, a serene escape among the pines.

7. Almora

  • Distance from Delhi: About 370 km
  • Drive time: Around 9 hours
  • Best for: Kumaoni culture, old bazaars, the Kasar Devi ridge and Bal Mithai
  • Best time: March to June and October to February

Almora has more of a lived-in town feel than most hill stations. Walk the stone-paved Lala Bazaar, pick up the famous Bal Mithai, and catch the sunset from Kasar Devi.

Where to stay: Sunita Elite.

8. Kausani

  • Distance from Delhi: About 430 km
  • Drive time: Around 10 to 11 hours
  • Best for: Some of the finest panoramic views of the Himalaya in Kumaon, tea gardens and total peace
  • Best time: October to June; winter mornings give the clearest views

Kausani is too far for a regular weekend, but on a three or four-day break it’s unbeatable. Wake up early, open the curtains and watch the sunrise light up Trishul, Nanda Devi and Panchachuli.

Where to stay: Sunita Himalayan Paradise.

Tips for a smoother weekend trip from Delhi

  • Leave early. Starting by 5 or 6 AM on Saturday is often faster than leaving Friday night in office traffic.
  • Avoid the obvious peaks if you can. Long weekends, Diwali week, Christmas to New Year and May-June are the busiest periods for every place on this list.
  • Pair nearby destinations. Corbett and Nainital are about three hours apart. Nainital, Mukteshwar and Ranikhet sit in one loop. Mussoorie and Rishikesh share a side of the state.
  • Book stays and permits first. Rooms in peak season and Corbett safari permits sell out well before fuel and snacks become a concern.
  • Consider the train. The Kathgodam Shatabdi (for Nainital, Mukteshwar, Ranikhet and Almora) and the Dehradun Shatabdi (for Mussoorie and Rishikesh) save you a long drive.
