Snowfall in Nainital 2026-27: When It Snows, Where to See It and How to Plan Your Trip

Quick answer: Nainital usually gets its snow between the last week of December and January, with an occasional spell in early February. Snowfall is light and comes in short bursts, so it’s never guaranteed. Your best chances are on the higher ridges, such as Snow View Point, Naina Peak, Tiffin Top and Kilbury, rather than on Mall Road.

There’s a particular kind of hope that comes with booking a winter trip to Nainital. You check the forecast every morning for a week, you pack the good gloves, and you quietly wonder whether you’ll wake up to white rooftops or just a very cold lake.

Here’s the honest version of what to expect, plus how to stack the odds in your favour.

Does it snow in Nainital?

Yes, but not every week and not every winter in the same way. Nainital sits at roughly 2,000 metres, which is high enough for snow but low enough that a lot of winter precipitation falls as rain or sleet in town. Snow arrives when a western disturbance (a weather system moving in from the west) brings moisture over the Kumaon hills during a cold spell.

In a typical season, the town sees a handful of snowfall days. Some years bring a heavy, picture-postcard fall that blankets the Flats and the boats on the lake. Other years the snow stays on the surrounding peaks while the lakefront just gets cold and clear.

When is the best time to visit Nainital for snowfall?

  • Late December: The first snow often turns up around Christmas or New Year, though it isn’t certain. Expect peak crowds and rooms that book out early.
  • January: Statistically your best month. It’s the coldest stretch, night temperatures can drop close to freezing, and most of the season’s snow falls now.
  • Early February: A late spell is possible, and the town is far quieter than over the holidays.

If snow is the main goal, plan a flexible January trip and keep an eye on the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts for Uttarakhand. Snow in Nainital nearly always follows a forecast western disturbance, so you’ll usually get two or three days’ warning.

Where are the best spots to see snow in and around Nainital?

Snow View Point

Reached by the aerial ropeway from Mallital or by a short drive, Snow View Point lives up to its name. On clear winter days you get a wide sweep of the Himalaya, including Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Kot. After a fresh fall, the ridge itself turns white. Note that the ropeway can pause in bad weather.

Naina Peak (China Peak)

The highest point around Nainital, at about 2,600 metres. It holds snow longer than the town and the walk up through oak and rhododendron forest is beautiful after a fall. Go with a local guide if the trail is icy.

Tiffin Top (Dorothy’s Seat)

An easy, popular viewpoint above the lake. It catches snow more readily than the lakefront and is a good half-day outing with children.

Kilbury and Pangot

Quiet forest roads about 12 to 15 km from town, best known for birding. Being higher and more wooded, they often stay snowy for a day or two after the town has melted.

Mukteshwar

About 50 km from Nainital and a little higher, Mukteshwar often gets more snow than Nainital itself, along with some of the best Himalayan views in Kumaon. If you have an extra day, it’s well worth the drive.

What is Nainital like in winter if it doesn’t snow?

Honestly, still lovely. Winter is when the air is clearest, which means the long Himalayan views that haze often hides in spring. Mornings are crisp, the lake is still, boating is calm, and evenings are made for a bonfire and hot pakoras. You’ll also find the Mall Road and Bhotia Market far more relaxed outside the holiday week.

Many travellers who come only for snow end up saying the clear-sky days were the highlight.

What should you pack for Nainital in winter?

  • Thermal innerwear for every day of the trip
  • A proper winter jacket, plus a fleece or sweater to layer underneath
  • Waterproof shoes with good grip. Slushy, icy slopes are the main winter hazard, and fashion boots don’t cope.
  • Woollen cap, gloves and warm socks, with a spare pair in case they get wet
  • Moisturiser and lip balm. The cold, dry air is harsh on skin.
  • A power bank. Phone batteries drain fast in the cold.

Is it safe to drive to Nainital after snowfall?

Generally yes, with sensible precautions. The roads up from Kathgodam and Haldwani are well used, but fresh snow and black ice can make the upper stretches slippery, especially early in the morning and after dark.

  • Travel in daylight and start early.
  • If you’re driving yourself, go slowly and avoid sudden braking on bends.
  • Check road updates before setting out, because roads to higher points like Naina Peak or Kilbury may be closed briefly after heavy snow.
  • Over Christmas and New Year, expect long queues at the town’s entry points and limited parking. Arriving before noon saves a lot of frustration.

If you’d rather not drive at all, the Kathgodam Shatabdi from Delhi is the easiest way in. Kathgodam is about 35 km from Nainital by taxi.

A simple 3-day winter plan for Nainital

  • Day 1: Arrive by early afternoon. Walk the Mall Road, take a short boat ride on Naini Lake and visit the Naina Devi Temple. Early dinner and a warm night in.
  • Day 2: Ropeway to Snow View Point in the morning for the clearest mountain views, then Tiffin Top in the afternoon. If there’s been fresh snow, head up to Kilbury.
  • Day 3: Day trip to Mukteshwar for higher-altitude snow and wide Himalayan views, or a slow morning in town before heading home.

Where to stay in Nainital in winter

In winter, where you stay matters more than usual, because you’ll spend more of your evenings indoors. Look for heated rooms, a kitchen that can send up hot food, and a location that doesn’t leave you climbing an icy slope after dark.

  • Seasons by Xperience: Our resort with a pool and forest views, ideal if you want resort comforts during a winter break.
  • Langdale Manor Nainital: A charming manor stay with old-hill-station character, lovely for couples.
  • Xomotel Bungalow Nainital: A homely bungalow retreat that works well for families and small groups.
  • Sukama Resort & Spa, Mukteshwar: For those who want to be higher up, closer to the snow and the Himalayan views.

Rooms for Christmas, New Year and January weekends fill early. If you’re set on a snow trip, booking now gives you the widest choice.
